Question --------- Given the initial ship location, should we calculate the winds at the initial location to factor in the effects of the winds on the ship in the first 6 h time period (P1)? Or do we assume that the ship travels at it's regular speed for the first time period and then use wind speed values from P2 at the final location of P1? Put in other words, should we calculate the wind at the initial location of the ship to get an idea of the speed at which the ship will be traveling initially, and if so, I assume we would use P1 for the initial location of the ship? I just wanted to check, because I don't want our calculations to be skewed because we used the wrong initial seed. Answer -------- Always use the winds at the ship at the initial time of a 6-h period. The exact winds will be known for the first 6-h period (P1.ge.time.lt.P2), but you'll need to forecast the winds impacting the ship for the remaining 6-h periods. As mentioned in class yesterday, you can assume calm winds (no aid or hindrance in travel by the winds) after you predict the ship is outside the influence of the storm. .ge. = greater than or equal to .lt. = less than
