Question -------- My team is plotting 1000 mb geopotential height lines using the 1000-500 mb thickness maps to come up with a geopotential height gradient between the cyclone center and the surrounding area in order to calculate the geostrophic winds at 1000 mb. On the given maps there are only two thickness lines that intersect with the 500 mb geopotential height lines. Would it be scientifically sound to draw thickness lines between the two given lines to get a better defined gradient? I understand that thickness can get messy around the cyclone center so we were thinking about areas away from the center. Answer---- ------ My best response is to plot the 1000 mb geopotential height lines and 1000-500 mb thickness maps for the case study associated with Project #9 to see what you find near and away from the 1000 hPa level cyclone center. This should help you visualize what might be happening near and away from the center of the final project storm.
